When asked what they want out of brain retraining, people often say they want to feel better or to be able to engage more in life. This is a great start to goal setting, and it is also important to have specific ideas in mind about what it means to recover or to be on a transformation journey. One way to help you get concrete and clarify your goals is to think about the following questions (these come from solution focused therapy): If a miracle happened while you slept tonight and you woke up tomorrow morning completely recovered or transformed, how would you know (i.e. what would be different)? What would be the first sign that you were doing better? What else would indicate to you that you had changed as you moved throughout your day? What would this change mean to you?
It is important to have specific ideas of how wellness shows up for you, because without them we don't know what we are aiming for. We may not even recognize our progress, especially if changes happen slowly and subtly over time (which is often the case). Our energy and intention have to have something clear to go toward, otherwise they will go back to our default and we will get more of the same.
With this specific, concrete target to aim for, you can put your focus and energy towards what you want. And while it is important to dedicate yourself to your practice, it is equally important to shift your focus towards what you want to create in your life and off of where you are currently. Remember what you focus on is what you grow, so lets get really clear on what we are focusing on!
Wishing you all clarity and ease in your journey!
Until next time!
